I think criteria depends on our preferences. When I think about mobility (even inside at home), flexibility, space and energy saving, security – I think about laptop. It must be powerful-enough (not necessary very powerful), comfortable-enough, easy to carry, long work from battery, long warranty. For desktop maybe speed of computer and comfortability (display size, keyboard, noise) could be the more important criteria.
P.S. This post is only about technical parameters. Cost of computer can change many preferences.
